Senior journalist Nikhil Wagle finds himself in legal trouble as a case has been registered against him in Pune. The complaint alleges that Wagle made offensive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP stalwart L K Advani, particularly after Advani was awarded the Bharat Ratna. The FIR was filed based on a complaint by a local BJP leader.
Nikhil Wagle is booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 500 (defamation), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Vishrambaug police station is investigating the matter, and the senior journalist could face legal consequences.
The controversy arose when Wagle purportedly made defamatory remarks against Modi and Advani on the social media platform X. These remarks followed the announcement of Advani receiving the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. BJP leader Sunil Deodhar filed the complaint against the 64-year-old journalist, prompting legal action.
The legal proceedings against journalist Nikhil Wagle were initiated following a formal complaint lodged by BJP leader Sunil Deodhar. In his complaint, Deodhar asserted that Wagle’s alleged defamatory remarks surfaced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on February 3 regarding the Bharat Ratna being conferred upon L K Advani, India’s highest civilian award recipient.
In response to the BJP’s actions, Wagle took to social media to highlight the situation and underscore the urgency of “saving our democracy.” Expressing concern over potential disruptions, he revealed that the Pune city BJP president had issued a threat against the ‘Nirbhay Bano’ meeting scheduled at Sane Guruji Smarak, hinting at potential interference unless the police intervened. In a poignant statement, Wagle emphasized the meeting’s significance as a stand against what he referred to as an “undeclared emergency.” The developments emphasize the delicate balance between free expression and the unfolding legal complexities within the realm of political discourse.
The Pune BJP has urged the police to deny permission for the ‘Nirbhaya Bano’ rally scheduled in the city, where Wagle is one of the scheduled speakers. The situation remains tense as the legal proceedings unfold, putting a spotlight on the intersection of free speech, criticism, and legal consequences in the context of political figures.
