On the precipice of general elections in Pakistan, the eve was marred by a devastating toll, as two bomb explosions rocked Balochistan province, claiming the lives of at least 20 individuals, according to official reports.
The initial blast struck with brutal force in Pishin district, leaving 12 casualties strewn outside an independent candidate’s party office. A subsequent explosion, echoing tragedy 150km away in Qillah Saif Ullah district, claimed eight more lives. The aftermath saw numerous others wounded, perpetuating the grim narrative surrounding these pre-election incidents.
As the nation grapples with the prospect of polls tainted by violence and allegations of poll-rigging, the first blast unfolded at the election office of an independent candidate in Pishin. Social media captured the aftermath, depicting shattered cars and motorcycles, testaments to the magnitude of the explosion. The targeted candidate, reported to be meeting with their polling agent at the time, suffered a grievous assault on the democratic process.

The second explosion occurred in Qillah Saif Ullah, intensifying the tragedy and underscoring the precarious security situation. Both incidents added to the rising tensions in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, as the nation braced for the impending elections.
Details surrounding the attacks are still emerging, with authorities investigating the causes and treating the injured in nearby hospitals. While the Pishin blast remained unclaimed by any group, the sheer brutality raises concerns about the integrity of the democratic process.
The Balochistan government, undeterred by the violence, affirmed that the elections would proceed as planned. Provincial information minister Jan Achakzai reassured the public, asserting, “Rest assured, we will not allow terrorists to undermine or sabotage this crucial democratic process.”
In a shocking turn, reports now indicate that at least 28 people lost their lives in the powerful blast outside the election office of independent candidate Asfandyar Khan Kakar in Khanozai area, Pishin district. This first attack resulted in over 30 injuries, highlighting the ferocity of the assault on the democratic ethos.
The second explosion targeted the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) office in Killa Saifullah district, further compounding the tragedy and marking a dark prelude to the impending general elections.
As investigations unfold, law enforcement faces the grim task of deciphering the motives behind these attacks. Balochistan, in particular, has witnessed a surge in violence leading up to the General Elections on February 8. With at least nine grenade attacks reported in various parts of Pakistan’s Makran division and Quetta, the atmosphere leading to the polls has been fraught with peril.
Motorcycle-borne assailants have targeted election offices and polling stations, with a recent attack on a government school in Killi Ahmedzai near Quetta adding to the growing list of security breaches. Over 50 such attacks have been carried out in the province since Sunday, casting a shadow over the democratic process.
The outlawed separatist groups operating in Balochistan, purportedly fighting for the restoration of local rights and an end to alleged exploitation of the province’s mineral wealth, have intensified their attacks. Candidates contesting the elections have become prime targets, with residences facing grenade attacks, leaving no corner of Balochistan untouched by the specter of violence.
The situation remains fluid, and the nation anxiously awaits the resolution of these grave challenges, hoping for a return to stability and the preservation of democratic values.
