In a startling development, tension erupted in Bareilly as prominent Barelvi cleric Tauqeer Raza was briefly detained by the police. The trigger for this unrest was Raza’s ‘jail bharo’ call, a protest against perceived oppression faced by Muslims in the country, particularly in light of recent developments related to the Gyanvapi issue.
The turmoil stems from a landmark verdict on January 31, where the Varanasi court granted Hindus permission to offer prayers in the Vyas ji ka tahkhana of Gyanvapi mosque. This decision has intensified religious tensions, leading to protests and demonstrations.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in a recent assembly speech, affirmed the construction of temples in Kashi, Mathura, and Ayodhya, asserting their significance in Hindu faith. This declaration has further fueled the already charged atmosphere.
Tauqeer Raza, The chief of Ittehad e Millat Council, called for a ‘jail bharo’ protest, urging his followers to take to the streets and willingly get arrested. The call was a response to what Raza perceives as oppression against Muslims.
Raza’s protest was not only in response to the Gyanvapi verdict but also a condemnation of the recent bulldozing of a madrasa in Haldwani, triggering communal tensions near Bareilly.
As Raza commenced his ‘jail bharo’ march, stones were pelted in the Shyamatganj market of Bareilly, leading to a brief detainment by the police. The police were on high alert ahead of Raza’s protest. Additional SP (city) Rahul Bhati mentioned the deployment of around 1,000 cops in Bareilly, with special arrangements at every mosque.
Despite police sealing the Islamia College ground where the protest was planned, thousands of supporters gathered. Raza’s declaration that they would not tolerate any further oppression added to the tension. It took two hours for the administration to persuade the gathered supporters to disperse, highlighting the delicate balance between freedom of expression and maintaining law and order.
Maulana Tauqeer Raza, a Barelvi cleric, is a direct descendant of Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, the founder of the Barelvi sect of Sunni Islam. This lineage adds historical weight to Raza’s actions and statements.
The incident in Bareilly reflects the complex interplay of religious sentiments, legal decisions, and political rhetoric. Tensions have risen, and the situation underscores the need for open dialogue and understanding to bridge the gaps in a diverse society.
