On January 31, Hemant Soren stepped down as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand and was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate due to a land scam case. That same night, Sudhir Chaudhary, an anchor at Aaj Tak, made offensive comments about Soren’s tribal background during his show.
Chaudhary suggested that because Soren comes from the SC/ST community, he should not receive benefits like reservation or the protections of the SC/ST Act. He made demeaning remarks about Soren’s night in jail, comparing it to going back to a primitive lifestyle in the jungle, assuming that all tribal people are poor and live in such conditions.
Chaudhary also questioned whether wealthy families like Soren’s should be entitled to reservation benefits meant for marginalized communities. He claimed that the Soren family, despite being economically affluent, sought protection under the SC/ST Act after Soren’s arrest.
Chaudhary’s recent statement sparked outrage on social media, leading to the hashtag #ArrestSudhirChaudhury trending on X (formerly Twitter) for most of February 2nd. This isn’t the first time Chaudhary has been embroiled in controversy; previously, he faced charges from the Kerala Police for inciting religious discord during his tenure with Zee News.
Chaudhary’s remarks suggested that affluent members of the tribal community shouldn’t qualify for reservation benefits. The Adivasi Sena reacted by filing a police complaint, urging for legal action against Chaudhary for his disparaging comments regarding Soren and the SC/ST communities.
In defense, Chaudhary highlighted that Soren himself invoked the SC/ST Act against the Enforcement Directorate following his arrest.
These comments by Chaudhary reflect a wider issue of caste representation in Indian media, where leadership positions are predominantly held by upper-caste individuals. A survey highlighted the lack of representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in media leadership roles.
In response to Chaudhary’s remarks, a tribal group called the Aadivasi Sena filed a police complaint against him under the SC/ST Act. The complaint denounced Chaudhary’s derogatory statements about Soren and the SC/ST communities, demanding that legal action be taken against him.
Chaudhary’s comments not only perpetuate harmful stereotypes about tribal communities but also underscore systemic issues of caste discrimination and underrepresentation in the media industry.
In November 2012, Sudhir Chaudhary and Sameer Ahluwalia were arrested for extortion following businessman Naveen Jindal’s claim that they demanded ₹100 Crore in advertisements to drop stories linking the Jindal Group to the Coalgate scam. They spent 14 days in Tihar Jail before being released on bail. Chaudhary was suspended as treasurer of the Broadcast Editors’ Association. In July 2018, the Jindal Group withdrew allegations, and bribery charges were filed against Jindal.
Chaudhary accused Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra of plagiarism, leading to a criminal defamation case filed by Moitra. Chaudhary later expressed regret for broadcasting only a part of Moitra’s speech. Zee Media also filed a defamation case against Moitra.
Accusations of Islamophobia surfaced when Chaudhary accused Muslims of hindering India’s COVID-19 response on Zee News in April 2020. Kerala Police filed a report against Chaudhary for his March 11 broadcast discussing “types of jihads”, criticized as Islamophobic.
In June 2023, Chaudhary wrongly accused Muslims of destroying a temple in Bulandshahr, later proven false by UP police. He blamed “progressive Hindus” for defaming their religion. In November 2023, the NBDSA reprimanded Chaudhary for Islamophobic content in his shows. Chaudhary also sparked controversy by advocating against reservations, claiming India’s cricket success stems from the absence of reservations in player selection. Social media criticized him for promoting divisive narratives against minorities and backward classes.
