Skills and knowledge are really important for a country to grow and for people to do well in their lives. India has a lot of young people, with the average age being 28 years old. This means India has a big opportunity to use its young population to make the country better. But to do this, people need to have the right skills to work and be ready for the jobs that are available.

India knows it has a lot of young people who can help the country, but it also knows that many of them don’t have the skills they need. In a report from the National Sample Survey Office, only a small percentage of people aged 15-59 had gotten any kind of job training.

To fix this problem, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship made a plan called the National Policy for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship in 2015. This plan aims to help people get better skills for jobs and start their own businesses. The government also started the Skill India Mission to make sure people all over the country can get the training they need.

The National Policy for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship tries to solve the skill problem by helping industries work with training programs, making sure the training is good quality, using technology to teach, and giving more chances for people to learn while they work. It also wants to help groups of people who might have a harder time finding jobs, like women and those from marginalized communities.

Bridging the Gap Between Learning and Jobs

The government is working hard to help young people from different backgrounds get the skills they need for work. The National Skill Development Corporation, part of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, organizes job fairs called Rozgar Melas across the country. These events help unemployed young people find jobs in private companies, which helps both the young people and the companies grow.

To expand opportunities beyond India, the MSDE has set up ‘Skill India International’ (SII) centers in Varanasi and Bhubaneswar. These centers help people find jobs abroad in countries like the UAE, Japan, and Australia, where there’s a demand for skilled workers.

The National Education Policy 2020 also talks about how important it is to teach job-related skills in schools and colleges and to train teachers to teach these skills well.

A new curriculum called Employability Skills, made with Quest Alliance, was launched in 2022. It teaches students to learn on their own, get ready for jobs after the pandemic, and learn skills needed in the 21st century. This curriculum is available online through the NSDC’s eSkillIndia portal, and more learning materials will be released soon. It will be used across the MSDE system to help as many people as possible.

Recent reports show that more people are finding jobs in India. This shows that efforts to create jobs are working.

Digital Skills and People Skills

The MSDE launched Skill India Digital (SID) to give every Indian access to good training, job opportunities, and help to start businesses. SID offers courses that match what industries need and gives support to people who want to start businesses. This is a big collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Skill, and other organizations. Many technology companies are already part of this platform, offering free training in new technologies.

Another important program is Future Skills PRIME, run by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) and NASSCOM. It focuses on teaching people about new technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. This program helps IT professionals learn new skills that match what companies need.
