Samruddhi Mahamarg, a 701-km access-controlled expressway linking Mumbai and Nagpur, is set to undergo a transformative upgrade aimed at curbing accidents and enhancing road safety. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), overseeing this project, has initiated the implementation of an advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) along the expressway.

The comprehensive scope of the ITS entails the deployment of an AI-powered Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and a cutting-edge Toll Collection System (TCS). This integrated system’s primary objective is to ensure robust monitoring, strict enforcement of traffic regulations, and rapid incident management. Its implementation aims to minimize accidents, facilitate efficient traffic flow, and ultimately reduce transit time for commuters.

Officially known as the ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, this six-lane expressway aims to augment connectivity between Mumbai and Nagpur. The project, divided into phases, has already seen significant progress.

The initial phase, spanning from Nagpur to Shirdi and covering a 520-km stretch, commenced operations in December 2022, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following this, the second phase extending 80 km from Shirdi to Bharvir village in Nashik district was inaugurated in May 2023 by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Presently, 600 km of this groundbreaking expressway is open to the public, significantly reducing travel time between the two major cities. The pending 100-km stretch under Phase-III, linking Igatpuri to Vadpe in Thane, is projected to be accessible by 2024, completing the entire corridor.

However, over the past eleven months, the expressway has recorded a concerning 1,282 accidents, resulting in 135 casualties. To address these safety concerns, the introduction of an ITMS is expected to pave the way for a drastic reduction in accidents and traffic violations along these highways.

An MSRDC official highlighted the current reliance on manual monitoring and response mechanisms, emphasizing the imminent shift to AI-driven control through the ITS. This transformative system is poised to significantly elevate road safety, relying on technology to oversee traffic management efficiently.
