Maratha Reservation Activist Manoj Jarange Patil Declares Rasta Roko Andolan In Maharashtra On 3 March, Statewide Protest To Be Held

Maratha Reservation Activist Manoj Jarange Patil Declares ‘Rasta Roko’ Statewide Protest on March 3

In a significant development for Maharashtra, prominent Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil has announced a statewide ‘Rasta Roko’ protest scheduled for March 3. The objective behind this demonstration is to fervently demand the effective implementation of the ‘Sage Soyare’ ordinance notification.

Manoj Jarange Patil, an influential voice in the Maratha community, is resolute in his pursuit of justice. He aims to spotlight the imperative need for the Maharashtra government to translate the draft notification concerning ‘blood relatives’ of Kunbi Marathas into law. This move is perceived as crucial to securing the rightful status and privileges for the Maratha community.

On Wednesday, activist Manoj Jarange asserted his belief that the bill providing a 10% reservation for the Maratha community might not withstand legal scrutiny. He reiterates his unwavering demand for the conversion of the Maharashtra government’s draft notification on ‘blood relatives’ of Kunbi Marathas into a legally binding law.

While the Maharashtra legislature unanimously passed a bill during a special session, offering a 10% reservation for Marathas in education and government jobs under a distinct category, Jarange holds steadfast in his advocacy for inclusion under the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota. He contends that placing the Maratha community under the OBC category would be inequitable, considering the already substantial reservations allocated to various castes and groups.

The draft notification issued by the state government last month stipulates that if a Maratha individual can substantiate their belonging to the Kunbi caste, their blood relatives will also be acknowledged as Kunbi. Kunbis currently fall under the OBC category, entitling them to reservation benefits. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde informed the legislative assembly on Tuesday that the scrutiny of the draft notification is underway, with 6 lakh objections received.

Call for Government Action

Manoj Jarange expresses discontent over the lack of action on the draft notification during the special session. He calls upon Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to address the hurdles in implementing reservations for relatives of Marathas. Jarange contends that the government would have second thoughts about the 10% reservation decision, emphasizing the subdued public response to the announcement.

“The (Maratha) community people have understood that this is the same reservation that they were given earlier also (but was later struck down),” he added.

Why Persists Jarange Patil in Hunger Strike?

Jarange Patil staunchly insists on a reservation within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) classification, stemming from the demise of a comparable bill unable to withstand legal scrutiny and eventually annulled in 2021.

Patil ardently calls for the acknowledgment of all Marathas as Kunbi, a caste nestled within Maharashtra’s OBC, with the corresponding entitlement to reservations. His fervent plea extends to permit the Kunbi registration for one’s blood relations.

The draft notification titled ‘sage-soyare’ facilitates the issuance of Kunbi certificates to Maratha relatives, substantiated by documents validating their Kunbi lineage. This provision further extends to individuals within the same patriarchal lineage and those connected by marriage, albeit within the same caste. The issuance of Kunbi certificates becomes pivotal, ensuring the incorporation of Marathas into the OBC quota. It’s this potential incursion on their quota that has ignited fervent dissent among the Maratha community.

Maharashtra Bandh on March 3

As Maharashtra anticipates the ‘Rasta Roko’ protest on March 3, the dynamics surrounding Maratha reservations continue to unfold. Manoj Jarange Patil’s unwavering commitment to the cause underscores the complex interplay of legal intricacies, social perceptions, and the pursuit of justice. Rasta roko can also be termed as Maharashtra Bandh on March 3.
