Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded his two-day visit to Lakshadweep, an archipelago of stunning beauty, and vibrant culture. Despite bidding adieu to the Union Territory, the impressions linger vividly, encapsulating the breath taking landscapes and the graciousness of its people.

Through his social media, PM Modi shared a glimpse of his journey, capturing the essence of Lakshadweep’s charm.

Amidst exploring the scenic islands of Agatti, Bangaram, and Kavaratti, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the heartfelt hospitality he received during his visit. His posts on social media, aptly encapsulated by captivating aerial views and mesmerizing snapshots, showcased the ethereal beauty of the archipelago.

Beyond basking in the tranquil mornings along the pristine beaches, PM Modi spearheaded a series of transformative initiatives worth over ₹1,150 crore. At the helm of these projects was the launch of the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI – SOFC), aimed at ameliorating the sluggish internet speeds prevalent in the Union Territory.

Complementing this, PM Modi inaugurated the Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) facility in Kadmat, an innovative solution designed to generate 150,000 liters of potable water daily. Simultaneously, the initiation of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) ensures equitable access to functional tap connections for every household in Agatti and Minicoy islands, marking a significant step towards water accessibility and sustainability.

Notably, PM Modi unveiled Lakshadweep’s first-ever battery-backed solar power project, epitomizing the commitment towards clean and sustainable energy. Moreover, healthcare facilities in Kalpeni received a much-needed revamp, while the launch of five model Anganwadi centers across Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy islands underscored the government’s holistic approach to development, melding infrastructure with preserving the essence of the vibrant local culture.

Beyond inaugurations and infrastructure advancements, PM Modi engaged intimately with beneficiaries of various Government of India schemes. He found their life stories incredibly moving, reflecting on the impact of these initiatives that foster health, self-reliance, and women’s empowerment, alongside ushering in improved agricultural practices.

Reflecting on the peaceful landscape and its tranquil surroundings, PM Modi remarked on the serene tranquility of Lakshadweep. He expressed that amidst the picturesque beauty, the archipelago inspired introspection and renewed dedication towards serving the welfare of India’s vast populace, a humbling experience that reinforced his resolve for a better India.

Notable from PM Modi’s visit was his adventurous spirit, embracing the archipelago’s allure through snorkeling experiences and serene beach walks, moments he termed as “pure bliss.” Encouraging fellow adventurers, he endorsed Lakshadweep as a must-visit destination for those seeking to explore and immerse in nature’s wonders.

In summary, PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit was a blend of awe for natural beauty, admiration for local culture, and a commitment to transformative developmental endeavors. His expedition, not just an exploration of geographical terrain, stood as a testament to the government’s dedication to inclusive growth and sustainable progress while cherishing and preserving the essence of India’s diverse cultural heritage.

Lakshadweep, a union territory of India, is a cluster of 36 islands situated between the Arabian Sea and the Laccadive Sea, about 200 to 440 kilometers off the Malabar Coast. The name “Lakshadweep” translates to “one lakh islands” in Malayalam and Sanskrit, though it actually consists of fewer than a hundred islands. Jeseri is the primary language spoken across the territory. Covering approximately 32 square kilometers, these islands form the smallest union territory of India.

Kavaratti serves as the capital of this territory, constituting a single Indian district divided into 10 subdivisions. These islands, the northernmost of the Lakshadweep–Maldives–Chagos group, emerge from an undersea mountain range called the Chagos-Lakshadweep Ridge. Initially comprising 36 islands, due to sea erosion, Parali 1 has submerged, leaving 35 islands.

Islam is the dominant religion, introduced by Sheikh Ubaidullah, and the majority of the population are Muslims. Festivals like Eid-ul-Fitr, Muharram, Eid-ul-Adha, and Milad-un-Nabi are observed, resembling the customs of Mappilas in Kerala.

Religious events such as Moulood and Ratheeb are significant. Moulood involves communal prayers and gatherings, while Ratheeb pays homage to Sheikh Kasim, a revered saint. Lakshadweep’s economy, estimated at ₹3.24 billion in 2004, centers on coconut fibre extraction and coir production, managed by government-run coir factories, production units, and centres.

Tourism plays a vital role in revenue generation. To promote tourism, especially in Bangaram and Kadmat islands, water sports activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, and kayaking are popular. The government aims to develop tourism infrastructure and introduce customs offices to boost tourism and facilitate direct entry for tourists.

However, tourism regulations require permissions for visits, restricting access to certain islands. Alcohol consumption is generally prohibited, except on Bangaram Island. The potential environmental impact of tourism has sparked debates.

To enhance the economy, the central government initiated a project installing undersea fibre optic cables, enabling high-speed mobile and internet connectivity between Kochi and 11 islands by May 2023. Additionally, Lakshadweep will soon witness its first statue of Mahatma Gandhi as part of his 152nd birthday celebrations, emphasizing his legacy and impact in the region.
