Marathwada, comprising eight districts – Beed, Hingoli, Aurangabad Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad, and Parbhani, witnesses a drastic spike in the deployment of water tankers. Initially, 87 tankers catered to 86 villages in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Beed districts in October last year. Now, authorities find themselves compelled to deploy 188 tankers to address the intensifying water scarcity.

The situation worsens as the number of villages dependent on tankers rises from 86 (October 9, 2023) to a staggering 193 by January 16, 2024. Aurangabad Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the worst-hit district, has 111 water tankers striving to meet the water needs of 101 villages.

Jalna faces a similar crisis, with 76 tankers supplying water to 75 settlements, while Beed has one village and three small settlements relying on a solitary tanker, as per the report from the divisional commissioner’s office.

Earlier revelations from officials indicated that 61 out of 76 talukas in Marathwada experienced a rainfall deficit between June and September 2023, with 19 talukas facing a deficit ranging from 30 to 50 percent. The region grapples with mounting challenges, emphasizing the urgency for sustainable water management solutions.
