Marathwada Irrigation Projects -Faces Imminent Water Crisis as Report Alarming 38% Decline in Storage Levels
Marathwada, a region known for its farming potential, is facing a serious water shortage. Reports indicate a significant decline in water levels across 750 small irrigation projects spread across eight districts. This drop, measured at 38 percent compared to last year, is causing worries about the future of farming and water availability in these areas.

The water storage levels in these irrigation projects are currently at a low 24 percent, as per an official report from the divisional commissioner’s office dated January 12. This is a sharp contrast to the 62 percent recorded at the same time last year and an even higher 71 percent in 2022. The total capacity of these projects is substantial at 1633.08 million cubic meters (MCM), but the current storage is only 392.37 MCM.
The report highlights a significant difference in water storage levels among the districts. Nanded district, with 72 percent of its capacity filled, stands in stark contrast to Jalna, where the water storage is a meager 3 percent. Dharashiv district leads with the highest number of projects at 206, followed by Latur (134), Beed (126), Aurangabad Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (98), Nanded (80), Jalna (57), Hingoli (27), and Parbhani (22).

The primary concern is the impact on irrigation, crucial for the prevalent agricultural activities in Marathwada. Additionally, the significant dip in water levels also jeopardizes regular water supply to these areas, intensifying the severity of the crisis.
