In the vibrant streets of France, amidst a melodic celebration of global cultures, a captivating performance caught the attention of keen-eyed journalists. A middle-aged man, immersed in the soulful folk songs of Maharashtra, became the focal point of curiosity. This musical maestro was none other than Saahir Sable, also known as Krishnarao Ganpatrao Sable, a luminary in Maharashtra’s folk music scene.
Saahir Sable, fondly known as Krishna, unveiled his musical prowess during that fateful festival. Born in a quaint village in Maharashtra, his journey was not without challenges. Despite a deep-seated love for singing, Krishna faced opposition from his mother, who insisted on prioritizing academic pursuits. His father, a devotional singer, struggled to make ends meet.
Discovering Krishna’s passion for singing, his mother sent him to his grandmother’s place for further studies. It was there that he encountered his mentor, Sane Guruji, who recognized and nurtured his musical talent. Despite initial resistance, Krishna’s resolve to sing triumphed, leading him to return home with a renewed passion for music.
As an adult, Krishna ventured to Mumbai to work in mills, momentarily setting aside his love for singing. However, the allure of music proved too strong, prompting him to abandon his stable job and pursue his artistic calling. This decision marked a turning point in Krishna’s life.
Krishna’s journey took an enchanting turn when he crossed paths with Bhanumati. She not only became his life partner but also a muse for his creative endeavors. Transforming her poems into compelling plays and songs, Krishna soared to new heights of artistic expression.
Despite achieving acclaim, Krishna’s success didn’t guarantee familial approval. His mother remained dissatisfied with his chosen path. Years passed, and even Bhanumati began to feel overshadowed by Krishna’s fame, leading to a decision to part ways. Undeterred, Krishna, the resilient artist, navigated through challenges, ensuring his show went on.
Enter Malti, a significant presence in Krishna’s life. She played a crucial role in supporting him and his family. However, the tranquility was disrupted when a drought struck Maharashtra, posing unforeseen challenges for Krishna and his troupe.
Saahir Sable’s journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of an artist. From the streets of France to the heart of Maharashtra, his story weaves through a rich tapestry of struggle, passion, and triumph. As the melodies of his folk songs resonate, so does the resilience of a man who dared to follow his heart.
The Maharashtra Shahir movie has garnered widespread acclaim from critics, earning praise for its musical brilliance and compelling storytelling. Kalpeshraj Kubal, a critic from Maharashtra Times, bestowed a commendable 3.5 stars out of 5 upon the film. Kubal lauded Ajay-Atul’s musical prowess and the captivating voices of Ajay and other playback singers, describing how they brought the cinematic Madhumas to life. However, he noted that some background tunes may evoke memories of Ajay-Atul’s previous works. Kubal acknowledged the seamless integration of Shahir’s songs and bharoods into the film, attributing this success to the collaborative efforts of the screenwriter, director, and music director.
Vinod Ghatge of ABP Majha expressed his approval with a 3-star rating out of 5. He acknowledged certain technical aspects but emphasized that the movie provides a gratifying experience for the audience. Ghatge praised the dedicated work of Kedar Shinde and the entire team, urging viewers to witness the cinematic tribute to Maharashtra Shahir and acknowledge its significant contribution.
Devendra Jadhav of Sakal commended Ajay Atul’s beautiful music, emphasizing how the songs play a crucial role in propelling the narrative forward. Jadhav observed that the movie gains momentum after the interval, featuring iconic songs from Shahir’s repertoire. The film adeptly portrays Shahir’s popular play, offering insights into the creation of Maharashtra’s Lokdhara.
Akhilesh Nerlekar of Loksatta deemed the movie a must-see, underscoring its status as a biopic that transcends compromises. Nerlekar praised Kedar Shinde for delivering a masterpiece, encompassing a captivating story, impeccable screenplay, and deemed it essential viewing for all Maharashtrians.
In addition to critical acclaim, Maharashtra Shahir has proven its mettle at the box office. The film raked in ₹3.33 crore within its first six days, showcasing a commendable performance. Notably, it witnessed a surge in collections on Monday, earning ₹1.03 crore. The three-day opening weekend saw the movie grossing ₹1.65 crore. In total, Maharashtra Shahir triumphed with a remarkable ₹7.35 crore at the Indian box office.
The convergence of critical acclaim and box office success solidifies Maharashtra Shahir’s position as a cinematic gem, celebrating the rich legacy of Shahir and resonating with audiences across Maharashtra and beyond.
