Maharashtra Government Notification Kunbi Ancestry for Marathas, Activist’s Demand Met

The Maharashtra government responds to activist pressure by issuing a notification recognizing Kunbi ancestry for Maratha community members. The move follows demands for Kunbi certificates by activist Manoj Jarange, aiming to secure reservation benefits.

The Maharashtra government said on Saturday that it will now recognize all relatives of Maratha community members who have Kunbi caste records. Kunbi people are farmers and are considered part of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) group. Manoj Jarange, a Maratha quota activist, has been pushing for Kunbi certificates for all Marathas.

The government issued a notification about the rules for issuing these certificates. It’s called the Maharashtra Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, De-Notified Tribes, Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Special Backward Category (Regulation of Issuance and Verification of) Caste Certificate (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

According to the notification, Kunbi caste certificates will be given after applicants provide an affidavit proving their relationship to blood relatives such as uncles, nephews, and other family members. This also includes “patriarchal” relatives whose Kunbi records prove they’re related to the applicant.

Once a field inquiry and verification are done, the Kunbi caste certificates will be issued promptly. The term ‘sage soyare’ refers to relatives like the applicant’s father, grandfather, great grandfather, and earlier generations who had marriages within the same caste.

The rules also state that ‘sage soyare’ are the relatives of Maratha community members whose Kunbi records are found. Relatives from marriages within the same caste as those with Kunbi records will also receive the caste certificate.

The notification emphasizes that all ‘sage soyare’ related to Maratha community members with Kunbi records will be given certificates based on those records.
