In a tragic incident at the Caglayan courthouse in Istanbul on Tuesday, two assailants, identified as a man and a woman, were fatally shot during their attempt to attack a security checkpoint. The attack resulted in the death of one civilian, with six people, including three police officers, sustaining injuries, according to Turkish officials.

The Caglayan courthouse, also known as the Istanbul Justice Palace, situated in the Kagithane district on the European side of the city, became the focal point of this shocking event. The sprawling court complex, inaugurated in 2011, boasts heavy security measures and multiple entrances.

Turkish Courthouse Attack

A dramatic scene unfolded as camera footage from Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency captured the assailants being confronted and eventually gunned down on the courthouse’s forecourt. The attackers, engaged in gunfire with the police, succumbed to fatal injuries.

Witnesses within the courthouse, such as Mahir Yildiz and Emre Ozyurt, described the tense moments of the attack. Yildiz mentioned the exchange of gunfire between the assailants and the police, detailing how the male attacker was shot first, followed by the female firing shots before being neutralized.

Following the incident, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya identified the attackers as alleged members of the DHKP/C, a far-left group recognized as a terrorist organization in Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. An investigation has been initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, as confirmed by Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc.

In an unexpected twist, it was reported that the elder sister of the female attacker appeared as a defendant at Caglayan only half an hour after the attack. She faces charges related to membership in a terrorist organization and possessing dangerous materials.

The attack unfolded on a day when Turkey was commemorating the anniversary of a devastating earthquake in the country’s south that claimed more than 53,000 lives. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences for the deceased and reiterated Turkey’s commitment to combatting terrorism.

Istanbul Attack

The DHKP/C, although largely inactive in recent years, has a history of engaging in violent activities. In March 2015, the group took a prosecutor hostage at the same courthouse, demanding information about the police killing of a teenager during anti-government protests. The incident resulted in the deaths of two gunmen, with the prosecutor succumbing to injuries later.

The DHKP/C also claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in February 2013, resulting in the death of a Turkish security guard and injuries to four others.

In a separate incident last month, an attack on an Istanbul church claimed by the Islamic State group resulted in the death of a man. Two suspects were later arrested on suspicion of the attack.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this courthouse assault, Turkish authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing their commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of their citizens.
