Bank Holiday In Maharashtra 19 Feb

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born at the historic Shivneri Fort in Maharashtra, India, on the third day of the Krishna Paksha of the Phalgun month in the year 1551 of the Shalivahan Shaka. In the Gregorian calendar, this date generally falls between February and March. Although the widely accepted date is February 19, 1630, per the Gregorian calendar, many Hindus in Maharashtra choose to celebrate Shiv Jayanti based on the Hindu calendar.

The Marathi Shalivahana Hindu calendar designates Shivaji’s birthdate as Falgun Krishna Paksha 3, 1551 (Julian) or February 19, 1630, according to the Gregorian calendar. It’s noteworthy that the historical discrepancy of not converting the Julian date to the corresponding Gregorian one persists.

In 2024, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti holds particular significance, with the Hindu Samvat calendar marking the day on March 10, while it is celebrated on February 19 in the Gregorian calendar. This observance commemorates the 394th birthday of the revered Maratha emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Short Biography
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Shivaji Shahaji Bhonsale; . 19 February 1630 – 3 April 1680) was a remarkable Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. His legacy is deeply rooted in the intricate history of medieval India, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the course of events.

Born on February 19, 1630, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj embarked on a journey that would see him establish an independent kingdom, strategically carved from the declining Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. The genesis of the Maratha Empire can be traced back to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s visionary leadership, culminating in his formal coronation as the Chhatrapati at Raigad Fort in 1674.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life was marked by a delicate dance of alliances and hostilities with various powers, including the Mughal Empire, the Sultanate of Golkonda, the Sultanate of Bijapur, and European colonial forces. His military prowess expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, with the capture of forts and the development of a formidable Maratha navy.

A distinguishing feature of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s rule was the establishment of a progressive civil administration. He meticulously structured administrative institutions and, in a move of cultural resurgence, revived ancient Hindu political traditions. The promotion of Marathi and Sanskrit languages replaced Persian in both court proceedings and administration.
