The upcoming Gramin Bharat Bandh, scheduled for February 16, has garnered significant attention as farmers gear up for a widespread chakka jam on major roads across India. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), in collaboration with central trade unions, has issued detailed instructions for this impactful protest.
The Gramin Bharat Bandh is set to take place from 6 am to 4 pm, with a substantial chakka jam planned from 12 pm to 4 pm. This demonstration aims to voice the concerns of farmers, particularly from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, who have been joined by their counterparts in a ‘Chalo Delhi’ march initiated on February 13.
In Punjab, a significant portion of both state and national highways will witness closures lasting four hours during the protest. The decision to close highways is a strategic move to draw attention to the farmers’ demands and convey their grievances effectively.
Harinder Singh Lakhowal, the General Secretary of BKU Lakhowal, announced the Gramin Bharat Bandh strategy during a meeting in Ludhiana on a Saturday. This strategy underscores the significance of the protest and outlines the objectives that farmers aim to achieve through this demonstration.
Commencing on February 13, farmers predominantly from Punjab, along with those from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, initiated the ‘Chalo Delhi’ march. This protest action is a response to an inconclusive meeting with the Union government, and it serves as a means to pressurize the Centre into accepting the farmers’ demands.
Dr. Darshan Pal, a member of the SKM National Coordination Committee (NCC), emphasized that the Gramin Bharat bandh call, initially planned in December, involves a comprehensive shutdown in villages. On the specified day, all agricultural activities, along with MNREGA and rural works, will come to a standstill. The coordinated efforts ensure the passage of emergency services while disrupting routine activities.
In addition to agricultural activities, the trading and procurement of vegetables and other crops will be halted. Village shops, grain markets, vegetable markets, governmental and nongovernmental offices, rural industrial and service sector establishments, as well as private sector enterprises, are urged to shut down. Shops and businesses in towns neighboring the villages will also remain closed during the strike period.
Given the participation of roadway employee unions in this protest, it is anticipated that public transport will remain operational, mitigating the inconvenience caused to the general public.
