Vande Bharat Sleeper Coach

Vande Bharat sleeper coach train is poised to transform the landscape of overnight travel across India’s major rail routes, representing a ground-breaking innovation in the realm of long-distance train travel.

Expected to debut by February 2024, this sleeper train is hailed by Indian Railways as a paradigm shift, offering a unique and world-class experience that promises to elevate passenger travel to an entirely new level.

Destined to eventually supersede the renowned Rajdhani Express trains, the Vande Bharat sleeper train stands as a flagship project for Indian Railways. It is envisaged to redefine premium passenger travel, focusing on delivering superior service and enhancing the overall travel experience. Here are the pivotal facets of the Vande Bharat sleeper coach train project:

Innovative Design and Manufacturing:

The production of this exceptional train commenced in October at BEML Limited’s Bangalore complex. BEML, in collaboration with Indian Railways’ coach factory ICF, spearheads the manufacturing process of Vande Bharat Sleeper Coach Train.

Coach Composition and Capacity:

The upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper train comprises 16 coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and 1 AC 1st coach, catering to a total of 823 berths.

High-speed Capabilities:

This sleeper train is geared to operate at speeds of 160 kmph, akin to the AC chair car version. The enhanced acceleration and deceleration significantly slash travel times.

Cutting-edge Exteriors and Interiors:

Featuring an aerodynamic design akin to the Vande Bharat Express, the train’s exterior sports a nose cone reminiscent of bullet trains. Each end of the train will house a driving cabin. The interiors promise a revolutionary experience, adopting best-in-class features inspired by international super trains.

Modern Amenities and Comfort:

Passenger facilities include a modular pantry, advanced toilet facilities ensuring cleanliness, sensor-driven intercommunication doors, automatic exterior passenger doors, hot water showers in the 1st AC carriage, and noise insulation for a serene travel environment.

Enhanced Safety Measures:

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains boast semi-permanent couplers for a smooth and seamless journey. The advanced bogie design ensures heightened riding comfort, with safety features that reinforce collision resilience.

Pioneering Safety Technologies:

Equipped with the domestically developed KAVACH anti-train collision system, the train aims to ensure passenger safety and reliability. Initially, BEML plans to manufacture 10 Vande Bharat sleeper trains, while ICF provides the propulsion systems.

Evolution from Train 20:

Originally conceptualized as Train 20, this high-speed, long-distance EMU train is tailored to replace the Rajdhani Express. It undergoes adaptations in its exterior body, sleeping berths, and onboard amenities to cater to long-distance services.

Production Contracts and Tenders:

The Government floated tenders for 200 new Sleeper class Vande Bharat Express trains. Subsequently, consortiums such as RVN-TMC and BHEL-Titagarh Wagons secured contracts, enabling the manufacturing of 200 train sets over six years.

Aluminium Body Innovation:

In addition to stainless steel trainsets, tenders were initiated for 100 aluminium body trainsets, where Alstom emerged as the lowest bidder due to the material’s lighter weight.

Consortium Commitment:

The RVN-TMC consortium, securing the bid, pledged to manufacture 120 trainsets at the Indian Railways facility in Latur and maintain them for 35 years, reinforcing their commitment via a performance bank guarantee.

The trains originating from Aurangabad are in urgent need of modernized coaches, especially those traveling to major destinations like Mumbai, Secunderabad, and Delhi. Replacing existing trains with Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches could significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers, offering superior comfort and amenities. Additionally, expanding the number of trains and improving city-wise connectivity from Aurangabad would greatly benefit commuters. Many currently resort to pricey luxury buses on weekends and holidays due to limited options, highlighting the necessity for enhanced and more affordable travel alternatives.
