India recorded a modest increase of 121 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, marking a positive trend as the number of active cases decreased to 856, as reported by the health ministry on Friday. However, a somber note was added with one new death reported within the span of 24 hours in Maharashtra, according to the latest data released by the ministry at 8 am.
The dynamics of the pandemic in India underwent a notable shift after December 5, when daily cases had dwindled to double digits. Subsequently, a resurgence occurred, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and adverse cold weather conditions. Notably, on December 31, 2023, the country witnessed a maximum single-day spike of 841 new cases, constituting a mere 0.2 percent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, as confirmed by official sources.
Corona Update in India
Of the total active cases, a significant 92 percent are currently recuperating under home isolation, reflecting a positive trend in the management of the pandemic. Addressing concerns about the new JN.1 variant, official sources have reassured the public that there is no evidence indicating an exponential surge in new cases or an alarming increase in hospitalization and mortality rates.
India’s battle against COVID-19 has experienced three distinct waves, with the delta wave reaching its pinnacle during April-June 2021. At its zenith, May 7, 2021, saw a staggering 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths reported. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, more than 4.5 crore individuals have been infected, and over 5.3 lakh lives have been lost over the course of approximately four years.
On a positive note, the number of individuals who have successfully recovered from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore, boasting a commendable national recovery rate of 98.81 percent, according to the latest statistics available on the health ministry’s website. In the ongoing vaccination drive, India has administered a remarkable 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, reflecting the nation’s proactive efforts to curb the spread of the virus and protect its population.
Is Corona back in India in 2024?
Considering the global nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, India, like other countries, may face future challenges from the virus. However, governments and healthcare professionals globally, including in India, have been actively implementing preventive measures such as vaccination campaigns, enhanced testing, and robust healthcare infrastructure. The Indian government has taken proactive steps, enforcing social distancing, promoting hygiene practices, and establishing quarantine facilities.
Advancements in medical research and technology have led to improved understanding of the virus, resulting in more targeted containment strategies. While the certainty of the virus reaching India in 2024 is unpredictable, collective vigilance, adherence to health guidelines, and staying informed can help minimize its impact.

When corona arrived in India? First Patient
On January 27, 2020, a 20-year-old female sought medical attention at the Emergency Department of General Hospital, Thrissur, Kerala. She reported a one-day history of dry cough and a mild sore throat, with no fever, rhinitis, or shortness of breath. The patient had recently returned from Wuhan city, China, on January 23, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak there. Although asymptomatic between January 23 and 26, she developed mild symptoms on the morning of the 27th.
The patient did not have a history of contact with any person suspected or confirmed with COVID-19, nor did she visit the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. However, during her travel from Wuhan to Kunming by train, she observed individuals with respiratory symptoms in both the railway station and the train.
Following instructions from Kerala State authorities due to her travel history to China, she promptly reported her symptoms and sought medical attention. This case highlights the importance of vigilance and early reporting in response to potential exposure to infectious diseases.
