February 19th Maharashtra Dry Day: Understanding the Prohibition

Maharashtra is set to observe a dry day on February 19.

Dry days, a phenomenon familiar to many, entail specific dates when the sale of alcohol is prohibited. Consumers find themselves unable to procure alcoholic beverages from various establishments, including shops, restaurants, and bars. These restrictions occur periodically, and with February just around the corner, let’s delve into the details of the sole dry day scheduled for the upcoming month.

Typically aligning with government holidays and significant occasions, dry days aren’t uniform across the entire country. Instead, specific states dictate their own dry days, where the sale and consumption of alcohol are temporarily forbidden. Noteworthy examples include Makar Sankranti on January 15 and Republic Day on January 26, observed as dry days nationwide.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti: A Significant Celebration

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Shivaji I, also known as Shiv Jayanti. Designated as a public holiday in Maharashtra, this day pays tribute to the Maratha warrior with grand festivities. In addition to the alcohol ban, educational institutions such as schools and colleges remain closed, contributing to the overall reverence for the occasion.

As Maharashtra prepares to honor its historical figure, residents are reminded to plan accordingly due to the restrictions on alcohol sales and consumption. Embracing the essence of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti goes beyond the celebratory aspect, encompassing a day of reflection and respect for the cultural and historical significance it holds in the hearts of the people.

Shiv Jayanti, also recognized as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Birth Anniversary, stands as a significant festival and public holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Commemorated on February 19, this day holds special significance as it marks the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the inaugural Chhatrapati of the Marathas. Date & Month: February 19
Day: Monday
Holiday: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti

The birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took place at the historic Shivneri Fort in Maharashtra, India, on the third day of the Krishna Paksha of the Phalgun month in the year 1551 of the Shalivahan Shaka. In the Gregorian calendar, this date generally falls between February and March. While the widely accepted date is February 19, 1630, as per the Gregorian calendar, many Hindus in Maharashtra choose to celebrate Shiv Jayanti based on the Hindu calendar.

The Marathi Shalivahana Hindu calendar designates the birthdate of Shivaji as Falgun Krishna Paksha 3, 1551 (Julian) or February 19, 1630, according to the Gregorian calendar. It’s noteworthy that the historical discrepancy of not converting the Julian date to the corresponding Gregorian one persists.

In 2024, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti holds particular significance, with the Hindu Samvat calendar marking the day on March 10, while it is celebrated on February 19 in the Gregorian calendar. This observance commemorates the 394th birthday of the revered Maratha emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Bank holiday is observed tomorrow on 19-02-2024 on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
