Section 144 in Pune

In a strategic move, the Pune city police have prolonged the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) until the culmination of March 31. Initially enacted until March 4, the extension was ratified following comprehensive discussions with all vested stakeholders in a meeting convened on February 28.

A late-evening proclamation by the Pune police unveiled a compendium of 26 directives designed to foster a secure environment and sustain tranquility across the urban landscape. Noteworthy among these guidelines is the stringent adherence of all bars and permit rooms to a prescribed closure time of 1:30 am. Indoor musical performances are circumscribed by the same temporal limit, while outdoor musical endeavors must conclude by 10:00 pm.

Refinements in the updated orders dictate a cessation of food and liquor orders after 1:15 am, granting an additional 30-minute grace period for establishments to conclude their operations, as opposed to the earlier stipulation of 1:00 am. The police underscored the importance of compliance with the guidelines issued, emphasizing a collaborative effort by all stakeholders.

Ganesh Shetty, president of the Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association (PRAHA), voiced concerns over alleged police coercion to compel restaurant closures by 11:30 pm. Shetty advocated for the acknowledgment of business operations until 1:30 am, and requested non-interference in liquor-related cases, citing government directives entrusting such matters to the state excise department.

Why Section 144 in Pune?

Section 144 in Pune- Pune’s law enforcement authorities have enforced Section 144 restrictions, extending their reach to pubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels citywide. This measure was instigated subsequent to a raid in the Kurkumbh MIDC area, masterminded under the leadership of CP Kumar. The operation unearthed a covert manufacturing facility for the psychedelic substance MDMA, accompanied by the confiscation of narcotics valued at an estimated ₹3,700 crore. The overarching objective of this operation was to disrupt the illicit supply chain funneling drugs across diverse cities in the country.

Suspicions have arisen regarding the widespread utilization of these seized narcotics in social gatherings, particularly those hosted at pubs. According to the stipulations outlined by the police, the mandated closure for pubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels is set at 1:30 am. However, the dissemination of viral videos on social media has cast doubt on the efficacy of this directive, showcasing continued gatherings in the vicinity of Elrow Pub persisting well beyond the prescribed curfew, extending till 3 am and beyond.
