Established in 2001, Seraikela-Kharsawan district was carved out from the West Singhbhum district. It emerged from the merger of the princely states of Seraikela and Kharaswan following India’s independence. This district holds historical significance and showcases a rich tapestry of traditions and cultural practices deeply rooted in its princely past.

Shibu Soren, born on January 11, 1944, is a prominent Indian politician currently serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Jharkhand. He holds the position of leader within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and serves as its President. Soren previously served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Jharkhand, first in 2005 for a brief tenure of 10 days (from March 2 to March 12), then from 2008 to 2009, and again from 2009 to 2010.
Throughout his political career, Shibu Soren has held various significant roles. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from Dumka during several terms, including from 1980 to 1984, 1989 to 1998, and from 2002 to 2019. He also served as the Minister for Coal in the Union Cabinet during different periods, including 2004, 2005, and 2006. However, in 2006, a Delhi district court found him guilty in the murder case of his private secretary, Shashi Nath Jha, which led to his resignation from the cabinet.
