Cab Driver Protest in Pune Postponed- The bustling streets of Pune witnessed a surge in anticipation as cab drivers geared up for a protest on February 20. Their discontentment stemmed from Uber and Ola’s apparent inaction regarding the revised taxi fares. However, just as tensions were reaching a boiling point, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) stepped in, issuing a seven-day notice to the aggregator giants, prompting cab drivers to defer their scheduled protest.
Cab drivers in Pune have initiated a protest due to the failure of Uber and Ola to implement the revised taxi fares that were duly approved by the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO).
Cab drivers had initially voiced their grievances to the Transport Commissioner’s Office, highlighting Uber and Ola’s failure to implement the revised taxi fares approved by the Pune RTO in January. Responding to their concerns, the Pune RTO issued a show-cause notice effective February 17.
The notice, directed to the Mumbai Transport Commissioner and RTO, enumerated the five demands presented by the drivers. The RTO, in turn, mandated that the aggregator companies furnish a written explanation within the stipulated seven days. As per the Indian Express, noncompliance could invoke necessary actions under the Motor Vehicle Act and the Central Aggregator Guidelines 2020.

Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar addressed the confusion surrounding Pune’s aggregator policy, attributing it to the absence of a state-level policy. He emphasized that the Pune RTO retains the authority to apply either the central policy or the recommendations of the Khatua Committee, depending on convenience.
Contrarily, an RTO official stressed the importance of adhering to central guidelines in the absence of a state policy. The official underscored the advantages of the central policy, including dynamic pricing management algorithms. A crucial decision might emerge after a meeting with the District Collector on February 21, according to Indian Express reports.
While drivers expressed readiness to follow the Khatua Committee’s recommendations, they raised concerns about the authorities’ lack of clarity. Keshav Kshirsagar, the president of the Indian Gig Workers Front (IGF), questioned the selective application of policies. He advocated for the inclusion of several beneficiary provisions, such as social security and health insurance, outlined in the central guidelines.
The clash between cab drivers and ride-sharing giants in Pune unfolds against a backdrop of policy intricacies and demands for transparent implementation. As the seven-day notice period unfolds, the resolution remains uncertain, leaving both drivers and aggregator companies on edge.
