Mumbai Bandh on Feb 16, Grameen Bharat Bandh

In a significant development, workers and farmers have jointly called for a sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh on Friday, February 16. The non-political farmers’ organization, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, has rallied farmer associations with similar concerns to unite for a day-long protest, scheduled to last from 6 am to 4 pm.

According to a report, farmers are gearing up for large-scale chakka jams on main roads across the country from 12 PM to 4 PM. This move is expected to lead to the closure of most state and national highways in Punjab for four hours, impacting the normal flow of traffic.

In a show of solidarity, several public intellectuals and artists released a collective statement endorsing the joint appeal made by workers and farmers. Thirty-four prominent figures have signed this statement, expressing their support for the sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh scheduled for February 16.

Will banks and offices remain shut during Bharat Bandh?

Several private and government offices are likely to remain closed on Friday due to the scheduled protest. The impact is expected to extend to transportation services, agricultural activities, MNREGA rural works, and rural industrial and service sector institutions.

What about essential services?

Essential services, such as ambulance operations, medical facilities, and schools, are assured to continue uninterrupted. This balance aims to minimize disruption to daily life while emphasizing the importance of the protest.

Understanding Farmers’ Demands

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has presented a set of demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the issues faced by the farming community. These demands include the implementation of a Minimum Support Price based on the Swaminathan formula, legal assurance of procurement, debt relief, no increase in electricity rates, and a stance against the installation of smart meters.

Additional Farmer Demands

In addition to the core demands, farmers seek free power supply of up to 300 units for farming and domestic use, comprehensive crop insurance, and an increase in pensions to Rs 10,000 per month. These requests reflect the multifaceted challenges farmers encounter, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing their concerns.

As the nation braces for the impact of Bharat Bandh on February 16, this article has provided a comprehensive overview of the events leading up to the protest. From the planned chakka jams to the endorsement by public figures and the intricate details of farmers’ demands, the narrative seeks to present a nuanced understanding of this significant call to action.
