The Baghpat District Court’s decision to dismiss the petition filed by the group of Muslims regarding the ownership of the site containing a graveyard and the dargah of Sufi saint Sheikh Badruddin Shah has sparked a historical and religious dispute.

The court not only rejected the Muslim plea but also instructed them to hand over the dargah to Hindus. The dispute, which dates back 53 years, revolves around conflicting claims about the site’s significance. A group of Hindus had asserted that the location was the ‘Lakshagriha’ mentioned in the Mahabharata, a palace associated with Duryodhana’s attempt to burn the Pandavas to death.

The dargah of Sufi saint Badruddin Shah, with a 600-year history, became the focal point of legal contention. The court’s decision favored the Hindu claim, citing a revived assertion of ‘Lakshagriha’ by Hindu nationalists and focusing on a technicality regarding the designation of the disputed site in 1920.

The Muslim side argued the historical significance of the site as the tomb of a 600-year-old Sufi saint, with the graveyard added later. However, the court’s decision was based on the evidence presented by the Hindu side regarding ‘Lakshagriha.’

Presently, a Gurukul is operating on the site, with Muslims visiting the location less frequently. The court’s decision led to an increase in security due to the potential for communal tensions. Although there have been no recent communal incidents in the district, authorities deployed additional forces to prevent any violence.

In response to the court’s verdict, Rajpal Tyagi, the manager of Gandhi Dham Samiti, the Hindu petitioner, announced plans to celebrate by performing a yagna at the site. The case highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding historical and religious disputes in India.

The Shaikh Badruddin Dargah in Belgaum is a historic and revered site, believed to be more than eight centuries old. The dargah, dedicated to Hazrat Syedina Shaikh Badruddin Shah Arif Chishti, is not only a symbol of religious significance but also stands as a testament to harmony and peace in the region.

Shaikh Badruddin, who arrived in the Deccan more than 800 years ago, played a crucial role in spreading the message of peace and love across southern India. As one of the first Sufi saints to settle in the region, he introduced the Chishti order of the revered saint Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti in the south.

The caretaker of the Dargah, Rafeeq Ahmed Ghawwas, shared insights into the rich history of the site. Originally from Delhi and a disciple of Hazrat Shaikh Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, Shaikh Badruddin migrated to Belgaum on the advice of his spiritual master. The Chishti order has been maintained and served by generations of Ghawwas’ family, with Rafeeq Ahmed Ghawwas taking over as the caretaker from his uncle.

The dargah, located within the historic Belgaum Fort, has received veneration from rulers of various dynasties, regardless of their faith. The site holds several archival records reflecting its vibrant history, with a notable possession being a 16th-century copy of the Holy Quran calligraphed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir. This Quran was originally gifted to the dargah of Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti in Ajmer but somehow found its way to Belgaum.

The historical ties between the dargah and rulers of different dynasties are evident in the firmans and sanads issued by Maratha rulers, expressing their veneration for Shaikh Badruddin and offering their patronage.

In recent times, the dargah underwent renovation, featuring scintillating Persian glasswork. The caretaker emphasized the importance of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the dargah, including the prized copy of the Quran gifted by Aurangzeb.

Throughout its long history, the dargah has stood as an abode of peace and harmony, adhering to its age-old motto of “love for all.” The ongoing efforts to maintain and preserve this historic site showcase its significance in fostering unity and understanding in the region.
