Aurangabad City -A ground breaking move to elevate traffic discipline and safety is underway in Aurangabad as the city’s traffic police embrace cutting-edge technology. Under the Aurangabad Smart City project’s safe city initiative, 122 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been strategically installed at 17 crucial intersections.

Scheduled to be unveiled on Republic Day, January 26, the ambitious project integrates ANPR cameras seamlessly with the e-challan system of the traffic branch under the city police commissionerate. Commissioner of Police, Manoj Lohiya, believes that this integration will herald a new era in traffic management, serving as a model for other cities to emulate.

Deputy Commissioner of Traffic, Shilwant Nandedkar, emphasizes that the system’s primary goal is not just to impose fines but to instill order on the roads and encourage responsible driving behaviour among citizens.

The strategically positioned ANPR cameras will automatically capture images of vehicles violating various traffic rules, including signal jumping, stop line breaches, wrong-way driving, triple riding, and riding without helmets. These images will trigger immediate actions in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act.

What sets this initiative apart is its dual purpose. Beyond promoting traffic discipline, the ANPR system aims to deter violations through the vigilant eyes of citizens. By promptly notifying vehicle owners of any transgressions via mobile messages, the system seeks to prevent traffic rule violations, subsequently reducing traffic congestion and accidents.

Traffic police officials, impressed by the effectiveness and accuracy of the ANPR, highlight the integration of CCTV cameras. In addition to controlling traffic at unattended intersections, these cameras play a crucial role in responding promptly to traffic congestions. Real-time information empowers authorities to redirect traffic efficiently, minimize disruptions, and swiftly apprehend fleeing drivers, according to ACP Traffic Ashok Thorar.
