Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray recently reached out to Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, pushing for faster action in renaming two airports. Aurangabad Airport
He emphasized renaming the Aurangabad airport to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport to D B Patil International Airport.
Thackeray highlighted that his government had proposed these changes back in 2020 and 2022 but faced hurdles. Some mentioned a policy to only name airports after cities, yet exceptions like Ayodhya airport as Maharshi Valmiki International Airport and Mopa airport in Goa as Manohar International Airport were made, honoring individuals like Manohar Parrikar.
Thackeray questioned why the same respect couldn’t be extended to Aurangabad and Navi Mumbai airports in Maharashtra. He stressed that if airports in Ayodhya and Goa could be named after specific individuals, similar recognition should be granted to these airports, reflecting the local sentiments and honoring revered figures.
Thackeray highlighted, “We submitted proposals for renaming in 2020 and 2022. But we faced delays citing a Union Government policy against naming airports after individuals.” Expressing satisfaction about Ayodhya and Goa airports honoring individuals, he questioned if Maharashtra’s airports could receive similar treatment.
He accused Maharashtra of enduring a decade-long injustice, lamenting the delay in recognizing the proposed well-known names. Thackeray voiced disappointment over the oversight of Chhatrapati Sambhaji’s name, urging the Union Government to swiftly approve their proposal.
