Ashok Saraf, a veteran in Marathi stage and film, has played a variety of roles throughout his illustrious career, ranging from lead characters to comedic roles and even portraying villains and serious characters in both Marathi and Hindi films.
Despite not being selected for the Padma Shri Award last year, Saraf’s talent and dedication have now been acknowledged with the highest honor bestowed by the Maharashtra state government.
Beginning his journey in Marathi theater, Saraf gained fame with popular Marathi films like “Ashi hi Banva-Banvi” and “Vajeer.” He later expanded his repertoire to the Hindi film and television industry, leaving an indelible mark with his versatile performances.

Ashok Saraf was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on June 4, 1947. He spent his childhood in the Chikhalwadi neighborhood of South Mumbai and attended DGT Vidyalay for his education. Some of his notable Marathi films as the lead hero include “Ek Daav Bhutacha” (1982), “Dhum Dhadaka” (1985), “Gammat Jammat” (1987), “Bhutacha Bhau” (1989), “Balache Baap Brahmachari” (1989), “Ashi hi Banawa Banavi” (1988), and “Aayatya Gharat Gharoba” (1991).

Ashok Saraf is married to actress Nivedita Joshi Saraf since 1990. They tied the knot at the Mangueshi Temple in Goa, Saraf’s ancestral place. The couple has a son named Aniket Saraf, who works as a chef.
In 2012, Saraf encountered a significant car accident on the Mumbai Pune Expressway near Talegaon, but he survived the ordeal.

Primarily known for his roles in comedy films, Saraf began his career with the Marathi movie “Janaki” in 1969. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he starred in films such as “Donhi Gharacha Pahuna,” “Jawal Ye Laju Nako,” “Tumacha Amacha Jamala,” “Chimanrao Gundyabhau,” “Deed Shahane,” “Haldikunku,” and “Duniya Kari Salam.”
Collaborating with Laxmikant Berde, Sachin, and Mahesh Kothare, Saraf continued his work in Marathi cinema. Some of his notable Marathi films include “Ashi Hi Banava Banavi,” “Aayatya Gharat Gharoba,” “Balache Baap Bramhachari,” “Bhutacha Bhau,” and “Dhum Dhadaka.”
Apart from films, Saraf has also appeared in various Marathi plays and Hindi serials. He established his production house, “Aniket Telefilms,” which is managed by his wife, Nivedita Saraf.
