The award currently includes a cash prize of ₹ 25 lakhs, along with a memento and citation. Winners are selected by a committee appointed by the Government of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made the announcement on Tuesday, recognizing Saraf’s remarkable contributions to the world of theater and cinema.

Ashok Saraf, a veteran in Marathi stage and film, has played a variety of roles throughout his illustrious career, ranging from lead characters to comedic roles and even portraying villains and serious characters in both Marathi and Hindi films.

Despite not being selected for the Padma Shri Award last year, Saraf’s talent and dedication have now been acknowledged with the highest honor bestowed by the Maharashtra state government.

Beginning his journey in Marathi theater, Saraf gained fame with popular Marathi films like “Ashi hi Banva-Banvi” and “Vajeer.” He later expanded his repertoire to the Hindi film and television industry, leaving an indelible mark with his versatile performances.

Ashok Saraf was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on June 4, 1947. He spent his childhood in the Chikhalwadi neighborhood of South Mumbai and attended DGT Vidyalay for his education.
