Amrit Bharat Express

Amrit Bharat Express stands as a remarkable addition to Indian Railways, offering a no-frills, high-speed travel experience tailored for long distances. Catering to cities separated by more than 800 km or those that require over ten hours of travel time by other existing services, this non air-conditioned sleeper cum unreserved train serves as an affordable and efficient mode of transportation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off this revolutionary train service from Ayodhya Dham Junction on December 30, 2023, marking the commencement of its commercial operations on January 1, 2024.

Rooted in an announcement made in July 2023 by Indian Railways, the vision for this venture was to design a train focused on long-distance travel comfort. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai at the cost of ₹65 crore (US$8.1 million) per train-set, the first train commenced commercial operations on January 1, 2024, after its inauguration on December 30, 2023.

The train’s configuration is noteworthy, featuring upgraded non air-conditioned second-class and three-tier sleeper coaches, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. A distinguishing factor is its dual locomotive system, operating in a push-pull configuration. This setup allows for improved acceleration and quicker direction reversals, enhancing operational efficiency.

Boasting 12 three-tier sleeper class coaches, eight second-class coaches, and two luggage coaches, these coaches are equipped with modern amenities like electric outlets, reading lights, CCTV cameras, bio-vacuum toilets, Sensor-based water taps, and a Passenger Information System. Semi-permanent couplers ensure a smoother ride, reducing shocks during train movement, while fully-covered vestibules ensure passenger safety and stability.
