1800 Hospitalized in Nanded District Maharashtra after consuming “bhagar amthi”, After Attending Balu Mama Saptah at Koshtewadi
A significant and alarming situation unfolded early on Wednesday as nearly 1,800 individuals were hospitalized due to severe food poisoning. The victims had consumed “bhagar amthi” during a religious program in Nanded district, Maharashtra. The affected individuals hail from Koshtewadi, Sawargaon, and Risangaon villages in Nanded’s Loha tehsil. This incident follows a similar case where 250 patients were admitted to a Parbhani hospital the day before, reporting food poisoning symptoms after partaking in “mahaprasad” during a religious ceremony.
Bhagar Amthi
In the recent episode, the Nanded district administration, based on preliminary reports, revealed that approximately 5,000 devotees attended the “Balu Mama saptah” event at Koshtewadi on Tuesday evening. They consumed “mahaprasad” in the form of traditional “bhagar” and “amthi.” Around 2,000 devotees began experiencing stomach ache, diarrhea, and vomiting around 2 am on Wednesday. Local residents played a crucial role in assisting the affected devotees in reaching the nearest hospitals in Koshtewadi.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan personally visited one hospital and engaged with medical authorities, according to sources. The total number of admissions is distributed across various medical facilities, with 750 people in the Vishnupuri-based government medical college and hospital, 100 each in Loha rural hospital and a private hospital, and 150 each in the district hospital and government ayurveda hospital. Additionally, 500 individuals were admitted to primary health centers in and around Koshtewadi.
Abhijit Raut, the district collector of Nanded, assured that the situation is under close monitoring. To ensure specialized attention, elderly patients with comorbid conditions have been separated from others. As of now, all patients are reported to be in stable condition. The district administration is actively responding to the crisis and taking measures to manage the situation effectively.
