Hyena in Aurangabad The city was in uproar when a video of a striped hyena wandering near Shahi Masjid, close to Delhi Gate, went viral on Saturday.

A group of young people playing nearby noticed the wild animal’s movements. Startled, the hyena tried to lunge at the youths when they screamed upon spotting it. Using the cover of darkness, the hyena ventured into the nearby Himayat Baugh.

These alert youngsters tried to reach out to forest officials but couldn’t get through. Eventually, they headed to the police station around 11 pm.

The video captured the hyena roaming near Shahi Masjid in the evening, searching for a safe spot in the open area. Dada Taur, the range forest officer, mentioned, “Hyenas are carnivores and might have lost their way while chasing plant-eating animals like deer or their young ones. The animal could be hungry and may have wandered from the nearby mountains toward the city.”

Dr. Kishore Pathak, the wildlife warden, highlighted, “Wildlife straying into neighborhoods near the Samruddhi Mahamarg has become more common over the past year. The habitats of these animals have been disrupted due to the construction of highways and expressways. Striped hyenas aren’t typically aggressive. It’s likely searching for a safe place in the darkness.”

This incident sheds light on the growing encounters between wildlife and urban spaces due to changes in their habitats caused by human development.
