Namantar Andolan

Namantar Andolan Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu) is gearing up to mark its 30th name extension anniversary on January 14.

Back in 1971, the visionary Vice Chancellor Prof R P Nath took the initiative to construct the university’s main entrance test, and the skilled engineer K C Chhabda crafted the university gate in just 35 days, adopting a ‘load-bearing’ technique on December 30, 1971.

This gate has stood witness to various historical events, including the Marathwada Vikas Anodoan and the renaming of the university. On January 14, 1994, the then Chief Minister Sharad Pawar officially extended the name of the university to ‘Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University‘ from Marathwada University.

The historic moment saw the then VC Dr Vithalrao Ghuge, joined by hundreds of activists, unveiling the university name extension board. Since then, the gate has become a symbol, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Public meetings, conventions, and book exhibitions are organized on this significant date.

In the previous year, the then VC Dr Pramod Yeole took steps to enhance the surroundings of the gate, prioritizing the safety of visitors from traffic. The beautification efforts culminated in the gate being officially dedicated to the public by former President Ram Nath Kovind on July 22, 2023.

As we approach the 30th name extension day, celebrated after the gate’s renovation, current VC Dr Suresh Gosavi, who will preside over the main function, emphasized the historical significance attached to the gate. The celebration on January 14 promises to be a momentous occasion commemorating the rich history and contributions of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

Namantar Andolan

The Namantar Andolan, also known as the Name Change Movement, was a significant effort in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. Their goal was to rename Marathwada University to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar University. The movement gained a degree of success in 1994 when a compromise was reached, and the name was officially changed to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

However, the journey to this compromise was marked by challenges and notable incidents of violence. Despite the difficulties, the Namantar Andolan stands out as a historic movement that not only sought a change in the university’s name but also highlighted the struggles and resilience of these communities in their pursuit of recognition and equality. The acceptance of the compromise name marked a turning point in acknowledging the contributions of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and the aspirations of the marginalized communities associated with the university.
