Mathilde Panot on Palestine, French MP Grapples with Palestinian Geography

Unexpected twists of a French MP’s Mathilde Panot on Palestine interview as she navigates the complexities of Palestinian geography, shedding light on geopolitical intricacies and UN resolutions inthis intriguing revelation.

French MP Mathilde Panot on Palestine

French MP Mathilde Panot- In response to an inquiry during a Tuesday interview on Public Senate, Mathilde Panot, the Member of Parliament representing Val-de-Marne and the president of the Nupes group in the National Assembly, faced an unexpected challenge. Campaigning ardently for France’s recognition of the State of Palestine within the UN, a query about the geographical orientation of Palestine in relation to the Jordan River left Panot momentarily perplexed.

The journalist, Steve Jourdin, posed a seemingly straightforward question: “Is the State of Palestine situated east or west of the Jordan River?” The response, however, was met with an unusual silence. Panot, evidently taken aback, questioned the relevance of such an inquiry, insisting on her reliance on UN resolutions for guidance.

Pressed further to provide a physical, geographical location for the State of Palestine, Panot found herself entangled in uncertainty. When asked if it is west of the Jordan, she responded with, “But I don’t know. I don’t know what you’re trying to make me say,” expressing a degree of discomfort and bewilderment.

The geographic reference of “From the river to the sea,” often employed by pro-Palestinian demonstrators worldwide, signifies the envisioned expanse of Palestine extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. The “river” denotes the Jordan, acting as the contemporary demarcation between Israel and the West Bank, while “the sea” signifies the Mediterranean.

This incident draws parallels with past instances where public figures faced probing questions, a tactic reminiscent of Jean-Jacques Bourdin’s approach to gauge guests’ knowledge on specific subjects. Notable examples include Nicolas Sarkozy’s faltering on the Sunni-Shiite distinction of Al-Qaeda in 2007 and Myriam El Khomri’s struggle with the nuances of fixed-term contract renewals in 2015.

In a bold political maneuver, the Unsubmissive France (LFI) Party is poised to propel a motion within the parliamentary arena, advocating for the official acknowledgment of the Palestinian state.

During a press conference, Mathilde Panot, the deputy group leader of LFI in parliament, underscored the criticality of the Palestinian situation. Expressing profound concern over the escalating tensions and precarious conditions in the region, Panot announced LFI’s intention to introduce the motion on an imminent Tuesday.

This parliamentary motion not only clamors for national recognition but vigorously asserts France’s responsibility in championing the acknowledgment of Palestine within the broader United Nations framework.

To accentuate the gravity of the situation, Panot revealed an upcoming meeting with a returning French medical delegation from Gaza, scheduled to transpire within the parliamentary precincts.

In the aftermath of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s directive for Palestinians to seek refuge from the southern part of Gaza, Panot highlighted the plight of 1.4 million Palestinians cornered in Rafah. She lamented that despite Rafah being a hitherto untouchable “red line,” it now bore the brunt of Netanyahu’s onslaught, with ominous warnings from various associations anticipating a potential “bloodbath.”

Critiquing the actions that culminated in forcing an entire population to seek refuge and subsequently targeting those in makeshift shelters, Panot questioned the underlying message of such a strategy and pointedly expressed concerns about what she deemed as Israel’s “genocidal intentions.”

Further voicing the party’s apprehensions, Panot urged France to adopt a more resounding stance, advocating for stringent sanctions against Israel to curb what she characterized as Netanyahu’s ruthless onslaught in Gaza. Mathilde Panot on Palestine
