Jalna Anganwadi Strike

Jalna Anganwadi Strike -Workers have been on strike for the past 38 days, seeking the acceptance of their demands by the state government. Unfortunately, the government has not met their demands, leading to a two-hour protest in front of the Zilla Parishad on Wednesday.

Led by the Maharashtra State Anganwadi Action Committee, Anganwadi Sevak helpers from across the state have been on an indefinite strike since December 4, 2023. Despite the 38 days of protest, the government has not addressed the concerns raised by the Situ Salgan Anganwadi Staff Association.

As a part of the protest, a march was organized from Ambad Chauphuli to Zilla Parishad on Wednesday. Labor leader Anna Sawant, CITU district president Madhukar Mokale, and others participated in the event.

The Anganwadi workers, who have been on strike for over a month, are facing increased pressure from senior officials who are sending dismissal notices. This has caused mental distress among the workers, and they have decided to block this approach.

During a detailed discussion with the deputy chief executive officer, the organization expressed strong displeasure over the dismissal notices sent to the workers. In a meeting held in front of the Zilla Parishad, all Anganwadi workers unanimously decided to continue the strike until their demands are met.

Strike across Maharashtra

Since early December, around two lakh Anganwadi workers in Maharashtra have been on strike, causing the closure of Anganwadis and affecting the health and nutrition of numerous children who rely on them. Although their protest at Azad Maidan has temporarily ended, the statewide strike will persist until the government provides written assurances.

The primary demands of the Anganwadi workers include a monthly honorarium of Rs 26,000 and Rs 20,000 for helpers, along with gratuity payments and other considerations.

These workers are seeking a substantial increase in their salaries – Rs 26,000, up from the current Rs 10,000 for honorarium, and Rs 20,000, increased from the present Rs 5,500 for helpers. Despite facing financial challenges during their protest in Mumbai, the workers remain optimistic that their efforts will yield positive results. Pooja Patil, an Anganwadi worker, emphasized the necessity of such strikes to compel the government to address their demands.

The recent protest outside Latur Zilla Parishad saw thousands of Anganwadi workers and helpers voicing their concerns. Following a two-day demonstration at Azad Maidan, these workers, who traveled from distant villages and towns in Maharashtra, are now returning. However, they have only received verbal assurances from state ministers. Additionally, there are reports of workers facing job threats if they don’t resume work promptly.

Shubha Shamim, president of CITU-affiliated Anganwadi Karmachari Sanghatana and convener of Maharashtra Anganwadi Kruti Samiti, reported that talks with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, and officials from the Women and Child Development department did not result in a salary increase. The unions were informed that there had been a Rs 1,000 raise earlier in 2023, and no further increment was granted.
