Is Facebook And Instagram Down? Technical Glitches Plague Meta’s Social Media Realm: Facebook and Instagram Encounter Widespread Access Issues

On this fateful Tuesday, Meta’s digital domain, encompassing Facebook and Instagram, grappled with extensive technical disruptions, unsettling thousands of users who encountered errors while trying to engage with these popular social media platforms.

Users faced predicaments such as unwarranted logouts from Facebook, greeted by an error message that cryptically proclaimed, “Something went wrong. Please try again.” According to Downdetector, a vigilant monitoring service, the surge in error reports commenced just past 10:30 a.m. ET on March 5. By approximately 11 a.m., Downdetector had amassed over 500,000 error reports, with a predominant 76% highlighting challenges related to logging into Facebook.

The predicament extended beyond Facebook, reaching Instagram users who grumbled about stagnant feeds. The outage tendrils also ensnared Meta’s Messaging platform and Threads, the Twitter-like application unfurled last year.

Facebook and Instagram not working

Meta’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, acknowledged the plight at 10:52 a.m. ET on X (previously known as Twitter), affirming, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.” A 10:17 a.m. ET post on the Facebook Login Status page signaled “Major disruptions,” accompanied by a message detailing, “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Elon Musk, the formidable tech magnate at the helm of X, seized the moment to jest at his colossal social media adversary. On X, he slyly remarked, “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.” Just shy of 11 a.m. ET, the primary @X account on the platform issued a cryptic subtweet, teasingly suggesting, “we know why you’re all here rn.”

Notably, this isn’t the first time Meta, previously known as Facebook, grappled with a multi-service outage. In October 2021, a global outage plagued Facebook, Instagram, and the conglomerate’s other apps for approximately six hours. The extended downtime was attributed to a “faulty configuration change” on the backbone routers overseeing network traffic among Meta’s data centers. This incident marked the lengthiest service disruption since March 2019 when Facebook experienced a 24-hour blackout across multiple apps.
