Starting its journey in 1958 as Marathwada University, it later transformed in 1994 to honor B. R. Ambedkar, a respected Indian leader.

The Namantar Andolan Journey: BAMU’s story includes facing challenges. In 1978, the decision to rename the university after B. R. Ambedkar met resistance, leading to tough times. However, the Namantar Andolan, a 16-year-long effort, succeeded on January 14, 1994, giving the university its current name.

Its connected colleges are spread across Marathwada, including Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Osmanabad, Latur, and Bhandara in Vidarbha.
