Under the visionary Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) phase two, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has given the green light to approximately 610 projects spread across 590 municipal wards. These initiatives are set to revolutionize the water infrastructure, guaranteeing continuous 24×7 water availability over the next three years.
Aurangabad has spearheaded this transformative venture and is poised to become the pioneer in offering uninterrupted water supply citywide. A substantial allocation of 3,300 crore rupees has been sanctioned for this ambitious project, with a significant 25% of the work already completed. Meanwhile, Coimbatore has also made strides in this direction, having awarded work contracts for 156 out of the 610 approved projects.
These initiatives are an integral part of the broader strategy aimed at extending 24×7 water supply to all 500 AMRUT cities, ensuring that every city dweller has access to continuous water flow. Following the successful implementation in Puri, these two cities are now taking the baton to provide this essential service.
AMRUT’s Director, D Thara, highlighted the necessity for effective water resource management in achieving 24×7 water supply. This involves investments in infrastructure such as smaller diameter pipes and additional storage facilities to facilitate continuous water distribution. While the initial phase might witness some water wastage as residents adapt to this novel system, the long-term benefits are immense, optimizing water utilization as residents no longer need to store water.
The “Drink from Tap” scheme, initially pioneered by the Odisha government under Naveen Patnaik’s leadership, marked a watershed moment in 2020 when Puri became the first city to receive continuous water supply. This initiative has since expanded to encompass several suburbs of prominent cities like Brahmapur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, and others.
The overwhelming success of the “Drink From Tap” scheme has prompted cities nationwide to vie for similar projects, with some proposing comprehensive coverage for their entire city. However, Thara cautions that these projects necessitate substantial investments in additional storage infrastructure, which might entail a time-consuming process.
While 27 suburbs of Bhubaneswar have already benefitted from the state government’s efforts, proposals are now underway to tap into central funds to extend this program to encompass the entire state capital, ensuring all residents have access to the “Drink From Tap” initiative.
